Honey Spas

In Russia Honey Spas is celebrated on August 14. This is the day on which the honey is blessed. Honey Spas marks the beginning of honey harvest. According to common belief, it is the day when swallows leave for the winter. This is considered to be a sign that summer is leaving. Vacant swallow nests resemble honey combs. Swallows are the birds that according to the myth tried to spare Christ from prolonged suffering on the cross and cried that he is already dead. Spas means Saviour. There are three holidays called Spas. Each of them is dedicated to one sacred part of the cross. August 14 is also the day on which, according to the legend, Russia was christened.

Hey, Natalia, you’re back! Great! Great haiku! So Slavic and yet so universal! You must be the first to have swallows and honey in the same haiku!:) It makes my mind soar! Hues of honey have been used to describe the state of our energy body. I believe our Slavic ancestors of ancient times had been strongly aware of this and had thus considered honey as ‘sacred’. One of the most famous archaeological finds in Slovenia is a sheet-bronze situla from Vače (6th century B.C) with the relief depicting, according to the more unorthodox historians, the ritualistic use of honey in those times. Enough for the time being. I’ll meditate about this one. A grand comeback! You’ll be surprised too. There’s nothing permanent in this world except change!?:)

Thank you! I'm happy to be back. Though I miss my mom and my Irish Setter dearly. This is one of the Spases. Each Spas is dedicated to one the three sacred parts of the cross. Thank you for the interesting information that you've shared with me. I'm glad to see you.
